Review

The Mystery of the Medieval Coin is the first of a fanciful two-book
time-travel adventure series for children in Grades 3 to 6. The sequel
is titled To Save a King.

Lucas, Marvin, and Nicole, three friends in Grade 5, become suspicious
of their history teacher, Mr. LeClair, and soon learn that he has
discovered a way to travel back to medieval France. The children figure
out how to follow him there and, along with gaining a first-hand
introduction to life at that time, they also find out that Mr. LeClair
is hatching an evil plan that may change the course of history. This
plan and presumably how the children will stop him are the focus of the
sequel.

The Mystery of the Medieval Coin is filled with narrow escapes, bold
moves on the part of the children, and dialogue punctuated with phrases
kids use today. Young readers will enjoy its suspense, and be amused by
the language and interactions among the friends. There is an excellent
description of medieval life in a French castle, and a good gender
balance of main characters. Parents will be glad that the author neatly
works safety information into the storyline as the kids do their daring
deeds. Recommended.
