Review

Emily, a young girl growing up in Victoria in the waning years of the
19th century, has just got over the excitement of the festivities for
Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee when her normally sedate hometown
becomes inundated by fortune-seekers heading north to the Klondike gold
rush. As gold fever seizes Victoria, even Emily’s banker father
becomes infected and goes into business as an outfitter for prospectors.
What concerns Emily is that the prospectors are looking not only for
gear, but also for good dogs. Emily is worried that Sam, the great dog
she recently brought back to health and adopted after finding him near
death on a beach, may be stolen.

Written in the lively and engaging style that has characterized the
outstanding Our Canadian Girl series, Summer of Gold—the final volume
of the Emily books—is highly recommended.
