Review

Kate, who is about to turn seven, is planning on having the best
birthday party ever. This is the year that she is going to learn to ride
a two-wheeler, swim in the deep end of a pool, and rollerblade down the
street. Everything seems to be perfect until her mom announces that Kate
must ask everyone in her class to her party—even Violet, who is so
bossy. Kate does as she is told; but there is a mix-up with the
invitations, and Violet believes that she is the only one who has not
been invited. Seeking revenge, Violet begins to spread all kinds of
nasty rumours about the party and tries to convince everyone not to
attend. Kate isn’t sure how to react. Then the day of her party
arrives and it seems as if Violet’s lies have won out—no one turns
up, not even Kate’s best friend Jake.

Not only has Wishinsky managed to capture the heart and mind of a
seven-year-old, she has also managed to create a completely believable
and realistic story. As readers are drawn in, they can sympathize with
Kate and even understand Violet and her motives. This story about
standing up for yourself and treating others fairly would make a fine
choice for a beginning reader. Highly recommended.
