Review

While many kids use the Internet to look for information about Canadian
achievers, there is nothing like having it right in front of you in a
very attractive book. The Kids Book of Great Canadians profiles more
than 150 Canadians, each of whom is widely recognized as having made a
major contribution. The profiles are relatively short, but they provide
just enough information for young readers to decide if they want to
learn more about the person. The profilees are grouped in sections. Some
of famous Canadians featured include Terry Fox and Tecumseh
(“Heroes”), Jacques Cartier and Roberta Bondar (“Exploration”),
Alexander Graham Bell and William Osler (“Science and Technology”),
Samuel Cunard and Elizabeth Arden (“Business”), Lucy Maud Montgomery
and John McCrae (“The Arts”), Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Agnes
Macphail (“Government”), Wayne Gretzky and Nancy Greene
(“Sports”). Nobel Prize winners are listed, and another section
encompasses brief statements on a diversity of Canadians from different
walks of life.

The oversize book is well designed, and the prose is easy to read. In
addition to the profiles, there are sidebars highlighting interesting
facts, splendid illustrations, a timeline, and an index. Recommended.
