Review

Emily, a high-school student, is being stalked by Michael LaVide.
Initially, she tried to save Michael from the bullies at the local
café, stepping in to stop their harassment of him. Michael,
misunderstanding her gesture of kindness, saw it as something more and
began to send her cards and small gifts, then e-mails. Now it’s gotten
to the point where no one is allowed between him and Emily.

Peter McPhee draws the reader gradually into this true-to-life story.
He begins the narrative from Michael’s perspective. At first the
reader isn’t aware of the person watching and photographing Emily.
This technique holds the reader’s attention as he/she tries to unravel
the mystery. The story ends with Michael’s voice. This time, the
reader is made to feel uneasy. There is no happily-ever-after ending for
Emily, and the stark reality of stalking is brought home.

The Emily character is well developed. Although she is a victim, she
fights to survive and is made strong by her experiences.

This young-adult novel is a must-read. Highly recommended.
