Review
The Seeker continues the story of Emma Sweeney, an alien being (known as
a Watcher) who was placed on Earth to watch over her sister, the alien
queen Summer. As Book 2 opens, Emma is living in Summer’s Kingdom of
Argadnel and training to be a true Watcher. She is worried about her
dying mother and pining for her daughter, Ailla, who was stolen from
her. Emma embarks on a quest that takes her through a variety of lands
and becomes part of the ongoing struggle for control of Argadnel that
started in Book 1.
This complex story is fantasy, though it has elements of science
fiction and reads very much like a role-playing game come to life. It
gets off to a slow start, with dense exposition (nearly 30 pages’
worth) that almost makes it unnecessary to read Book 1. Still, the
reader who perseveres will be amply rewarded. Recommended.
