Review
The color blue dominates each of Lambert Davis’s lovely illustrations,
and “blue” is the tone that best describes this story of Bruun and
the mother bear. A young boy saves and befriends a polar bear that is
captured when it comes to eat from the town dump. The polar bear returns
the favor when they are both lost in a snowstorm. Although the story is
sad, this poignant tale leaves the reader with the hope that a bond can
be forged between humankind and nature. An information section at the
end of the book provides some interesting facts about polar bears. We
learn, for example, that Churchill, Manitoba, is the “polar bear
capital of the world.” Snow Bear will be a welcome addition to any
public or school and library. Highly recommended.
