The Little family acquire a dog and name her Sally Dog Little. Each
family member has different needs and different expectations of Sally
Dog. Mr. Little wants a dog who barks only at burglars, Mrs. Little
wants a dog to share her daily walks, and Twinkle Little wants a dog to
sleep on her bed. Two ghostly pirates arrive one day, and only Sally Dog
can see them. She barks, and is scolded by the family for disturbing
them for no apparent reason. When night falls, Sally Dog joins the
pirates, who have a map showing where to find buried treasure. The
treasure chest includes not only jewels but also a large bone! Sally Dog
gets the bone, while the jewels are left in the chest and buried once
again. The next morning, Sally Dog is on Twinkle’s bed as usual. There
is no trace of a hole under the oak tree, and Twinkle wonders how Sally
Dog managed to acquire a large bone during the night.
Bill Richardson is best known as the host of the CBC Radio program
Richardson’s Roundup, and for having won the Stephen Leacock Medal for
Humour. His highly imaginative, deliciously funny story will delight
anyone young or young-at-heart.
Sally Dog Little is award-winning artist Céline Malépart’s sixth
book for children. Her whimsical cartoon characters are as funny as
Richardson’s text. Sally Dog has the appearance of a dachshund, with
an overly long pointy snout that extends out of a huge head that’s
attached to a big sausage. Highly recommended.
