Review

Dog detectives Lu and Clancy accompany Lu’s cousin, Jake, on a visit
to the carnival, which features their favorite ride, The Drop of Doom.
Jake is learning to be a magician and does several tricks for the
detectives (instructions for several magic tricks are given at the end
of some chapters). While watching a magic show, Clancy learns of a plot
to rob riders on The Drop of Doom. The detectives want to stop the plan,
but Jake keeps sidetracking them. Finally, Lu and Clancy foil the crooks
with a trick of their own.

This charming story will encourage children to try the magic tricks
themselves. Both the text and the instructions for the tricks are simple
and clear. Pat Cupples’s bright, amusing illustrations enhance the
sense of frantic fun and complement the text. Highly recommended.
