Review

Dog lovers of all ages will enjoy this simple but charming story about
the author’s hound dog, Mr. Bob. The book began with Johnston’s very
realistic, detailed sketches of her dog in his many poses. She then
weaves a story around them. In the story, Mr. Bob spends most of his
days watching the things around him, like the cows in the nearby pasture
and the clouds in the sky. One day, when some birds drop by to visit
him, Mr. Bob tells them that he wishes he could fly. The birds leave but
soon return with all their friends. Before he knows it, the birds lift
Mr. Bob into the air and carry him away on a magical trip.

The best part of this book are Johnston’s pictures, which are quite
wonderful. Dogs have many facial expressions as well as body language,
and Johnston has captured them all. Highly recommended.
