Review
It is the start of a new winter day and Jillian Jiggs cannot wait to get
out and play with her friends in the fresh snow. Unfortunately, her
favorite winter hat is missing. Her mother says, “You’d lose your
head if it wasn’t attached. And where would I find you another that
matched?” Jillian convinces her mother that a funny costume hat will
do and so she meets her friends outside dressed like a Martian.
Jillian’s friends decide to pretend that they are explorers on Mars.
First they make the Martian world full of snow monsters and caves and
then they start building snow Martians and animals. Suddenly one of her
friends notices that Jillian’s scarf is gone. The kids keep playing in
the snow and before they know it, Jillian has lost her mitts as well.
Once again, Phoebe Gilman has captured a perfect snapshot of the
universe as seen through a child’s eyes. Her young heroine Jillian
does not mean to be thoughtless, but who can worry about hats, mitts,
and scarfs when there are Martian caves to be explored and Martian snow
pigs to be made? As in previous Jiggs adventures, the tale is told in
rhyming couplets. If readers examine Gilman’s wonderful artwork
carefully, they can spot each moment where Jillian loses her togs. It is
enough to drive a parent crazy. Highly recommended.
