Review
One morning Sammy wakes up to discover it’s snowing outside. The heavy
snow continues to fall through breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then it
keeps snowing for an entire month. When it finally stops, everything
outside is completely white. Trees and houses are no longer visible and
snowplows are working in full force trying to clear the roads. Sammy
goes outside to explore, and imagines what might be hidden beneath the
snow. At first it’s a black bear with cubs snuggled in a snow cave.
Then he sees whales and seals diving in and out of Arctic waters. A
woolly mammoth and a ship are encased in ice. He even envisions Santa
and his elves busily making toys in his workshop.
Each morning Sammy enjoys entering his snow-covered world. But when the
sun melts the snow, a new world is revealed. When all the snow is gone,
he then imagines grass.
This charming story will delight young readers as they’re inspired to
let their own imaginations run wild. Award-winning illustrator Kady
MacDonald Denton uses soft-watercolour images to convey Sammy’s snowy
world. Highly recommended.
