Review
Ruth Ohi’s latest picture book for the toddler set takes an endearing
look at sisterhood. The rhyme and storyline are simple: “Sister in the
kitchen. / Sister in my room. / Sister in a box. / Sister going zoom.”
Ohi’s watercolour illustrations fill in the missing information: a
preschool-aged girl with her younger sibling make cookies in the
kitchen; the younger sister reaches for the older sister’s breakable
toys in the older girl’s bedroom; the younger sister plays in a
cardboard box; the older sister pushes the younger one around in a box,
pretending it’s a car. The warm, colourful artwork carries the
emotional content of the story, revealing the caring but sometimes
trying relationship between sisters in the faces of the young girls.
These are situations and experiences most siblings have encountered and
will relate to. Highly recommended.
