Review

Environmental issues are presented to children in this story of a
blue-spotted prairie swamp frog named Willy, who becomes aware of the
dangers to his habitat posed by the “two-leggers” and their
machines. A boy named Benny catches Willy and takes him away. Benny’s
father persuades his son to photograph Willy and then set him free where
he found him. Benny and his father discover that the blue-spotted swamp
frog is on the endangered species list and that his habitat is to be
drained and developed as the site for a golf course and condominiums.
Meanwhile, Willy and the animals do everything in their power to save
their swamp. In a hopeful and satisfying conclusion, the Department of
Conservation arrives to protect the swamp.

This book would be useful for science classes and Earth Day activities,
and as an introduction to wetland preservation. The information it
provides will encourage children to discover and research their own
related topics. The story is told in a straightforward manner and
enhanced by simple, colorful illustrations. Recommended.
