Review

Romanuk’s 16th edition of Hockey Superstars does not depart much from
the format that young readers have come to expect. 2001–2002 contains
the anticipated 16 glossy full-color mini-posters of the National Hockey
League’s “superstars,” as chosen by Romanuk. Alphabetically
arranged from Jason Allison to Ryan Smith, with Mario Lemieux being
featured on the cover, Romanuk’s selections include seven centres,
four goalies, three defensemen, and two wingers from 13 different NHL
teams. Given the stellar performance of goalie Martin Brodeur in
Canada’s gold medal win at the 2002 Olympic Games, readers will be
pleased to find him also in this year’s volume. While previous
editions used the backs of the player posters to present two columns of
text and a box of “tombstone” data, this material now more
appropriately faces the player being described. As in previous editions,
two matte-paper sections invite readers to record various predictions
regarding NHL teams and players or to document their own hockey stats. A
new section identifies 10 hockey-related Web sites. Recommended.
