Review

These four latest instalments in the Sports in Action combine pithy,
informative prose with action-packed photographs to produce an
outstanding introduction to the subject. Each book is formatted in short
chapters with plenty of subheadings to impart information in
easy-to-grasp chunks. A glossary and index are included at the back of
each book.

Horseback Riding in Action examines the bond between rider and horse
that begins with mastery of the manure fork and ends with winning a
ribbon at a competition; it also covers the basic techniques of
mounting, riding, and jumping a horse and offers advice on what to do
when a horse rears or gets “nappy.” Football in Action relates the
history and essentials of one of North America’s most popular games;
both boys and girls are shown playing this highly physical sport.
Martial Arts in Action takes the reader on a tour of the world of Asian
fighting arts; it also discusses the history of the various styles and
notes the self-discipline and dedication required to excel as a martial
arts student. Golf in Action explains the difference between a putt and
a pitch shot; it also explains how to keep a grip on both your club and
your temper.

Although these books are aimed at early readers, the text makes
interesting reading for sports fans of all ages. Highly recommended.
