Review

In the Andes, men of the Kogi tribe weave just one cloth garment at a
time and wear it until it falls off their backs. In southern India, a
Hindu woman wears a thaali—a necklace that reveals both her social
status and her family background. In many cultures, teenagers wear
outrageous clothes to rebel against their parents. These are just a few
of the hundreds of facts about clothes in this engaging book from the
Discovering World Cultures series.

Clothing and Jewelry is divided into a dozen short chapters. Each
chapter is further subdivided into concise one-paragraph units that
focus on a particular fact about clothes. Chapter titles include “What
Are Clothes For?,” “Jewels Speak,” “Clothing and Status,”
“Fashion,” “Footwear and Feet,” “Raw Materials,” “Dressing
Up,” “Wearing a Uniform,” “Accessories,” “Religious
Clothes,” “Hairstyles and Hats,” “Body Decoration,” and
“Celebrations and Ceremonies.” Each page contains nearly a dozen
striking photographs and/or color illustrations. This is a terrific book
for clothing fanatics, history buffs, and just anyone else who loves a
well-researched and well-written book. Highly recommended.
