Review
In which Atlantic province would you expect to be served a touton with
maple syrup? Who wrote the book of poems called Alligator Pie? The skunk
cabbage was named for the black-and-white stripes on its leaves—true
or false? What caused Niagara Falls to run dry on the night of March 29,
1848? In what sport did Tracy Wilson and Rob McCall rule as Canadian
champs from 1982 to 1988? A.A. Milne based his character Winnie the Pooh
on a Canadian bear—true or false?
These are some of the questions offered up in this Canadian version of
the popular American trivia company, Brain Quest. The questions were
supplied by Linda Granfield and Pat Hancock; both are veteran writers of
children’s nonfiction. There are two cardbooks in the set, each
cardbook contains 500 questions and answers arranged in seven
categories—Notable Canadians, Pre-Confederation, Provinces and
Territories, Post- Confederation, Arts and Literature, Science and
Technology, This and That. Although the questions are touted as suitable
for middle-school students, most of the questions are aimed teens, and
many adults will find the content challenging. This is not a bad thing.
These question cards are great for a long car trip or rainy days at the
cottage, and they can be used as substitute questions to allow
youngsters to participate in trivia board games. Highly recommended.
