Review

Mary Beth is determined to be herself and not “the princess” her
mother wants her to be. The young girl just wants to wear blue jeans and
ride horses. To avoid having to go to dance lessons, wear pretty
dresses, and participate in the annual talent show, Mary Beth thinks up
all kinds of plans to escape. It isn’t until her mother, who Mary Beth
thinks is beautiful, and Mary Beth end up auditioning for a part in the
same play—Oliver—that they both come to see and accept each other
for who they really are.

Ted Staunton has created a very realistic and heartwarming story. Mary
Beth is a conflicted young girl torn between not wanting to disappoint
her mother and needing to be true to herself. Mary Beth’s words and
actions all add up to a credible character. Young readers will enjoy
Princess, an entertaining book that is hard to put down. Highly
recommended.
