Martin Bridge: Blazing Ahead!

Deborah Dowson is a Canadian children’s librarian living in Harvard,
Massachusetts.

Martin and his fellow Junior Badgers travel to Camp Kitchwahoo for an
overnight visit. Alex has brought along a container of his homemade
“classic horror-movie slime.” Martin suspects that Alex intends to
use the slime on him, yet when he does, it is an effective prop in their
campfire skit. Unfortunately the slime ends up in the wrong hands as
Head Badger Bob mistakenly uses it to garnish the hot dogs for lunch.

In the second story Martin is annoyed that he is missing his favourite
television show to help his Dad repair their old lawnmower, but as he
learns things about tools and some things he didn’t know about his
Dad, Martin realizes that missing out on his show is worth the benefit
of learning how to fix things.

These are wonderful stories for new chapter-book readers. The
characters are engaging, the situations are humorous and lively, and
there’s an educational component as well (the book contains a recipe
to make slime and a guide to Morse code). The language is easy to follow
but also includes many fun and silly words and names, and lots of
animated dialogue. The large print format, generous illustrations, and
attractive hardcover make for a very appealing presentation. Highly
recommended.
