Review

These two new additions to the Franklin the Turtle series are based on
the TV series, which is itself based on the books written by Paulette
Bourgeois and illustrated by Brenda Clark.

In Franklin’s Canoe Trip (based on the TV episode of the same title),
Franklin accompanies his father and his best friend, Bear, on a canoeing
and camping trip. He wants to be just like the explorers of long ago,
but the trip prove to be more difficult than expected. As usual,
Franklin learns a valuable lesson about life during his adventures.

In Franklin and the Big Kid (based on the TV episode titled “Franklin
Delivers”), Franklin wants to hang out with the other animals. He
especially admires Jack Rabbit, who invites him to watch the older
animals skateboard. Franklin tries to dress and act like Jack, but after
helping him deliver four large loads of fliers, he has second thoughts
about growing up too soon and taking on all the additional
responsibilities.

Bright, cheerful illustrations enhance the lively text, which will
likely stimulate good discussions. At the same time, children will
appreciate the original books for their more detailed illustrations.
Recommended.
