Review

Every day Patti dreams of having her own pony, and she’s hoping that
her dream will come true because she’s about to celebrate her 10th
birthday. When her wish doesn’t come true (her parents can’t afford
to keep a pet horse on a working farm), Patti sets out to prove to
herself and to her parents what she’s made of by taking on more
responsibilities. Some of those responsibilities include raising a baby
chick, helping her injured brother Jamie, putting out a hay fire,
serving dinner, and singlehandedly surviving a winter blizzard in the
woods. With each experience, she grows into a stronger, more
resourceful, sensible young girl.

Life on the Farm is both inspiring and heartwarming as Patti discovers
who she is. Heather Gardam has created an irresistible new heroine for
preteen readers, who will delight in Patti’s adventures and
misadventures. Highly recommended.
