Review

When Arica slips through a crack in the Earth that leads to the land of
Bundelag, her cousin Conner follows her. The pair soon find themselves
on an adventure they won’t ever forget! Arica’s grandmother, the
Fairy Queen, has summoned her to South Bundelag to get back the
priceless Book of Fairies. The ancient book has fallen into the hands of
evil Uncle Raden. Shadow, the beautiful young unicorn that Arica rides,
is not allowed to journey to the South. Can Connor and Arica get away
with disguising Shadow as a horse? How far will Arica and Connor go to
get the Book of Fairies? Arica soon finds herself making a most
unselfish decision about her beloved Shadow.

Vicki Blum’s first two fantasy adventures in Bundelag—Wish Upon a
Unicorn (1999) and The Shadow Unicorn (2000)—were both very
successful. In this latest volume, Blum compares the landscape of South
Bundelag to that of Saskatchewan, bringing a sense of reality to
setting. Arica is an appealing heroine and a definite hit with young
girls. The Land Without Unicorns is an exciting, mystical, adventurous,
enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
