Review
Long ago, in Bagdad, there was a humble porter named Sindbad. He lived a
life of squalor until he made the acquaintance of a rich old merchant.
It turned out that the old man was also called Sindbad and in his youth
he had been a sailor and adventurer.
Sindbad the Sailor invites Sindbad the Porter back to his luxurious
home. Once they settle in, sitting on silk pillows drinking hot tea, the
old man begins to tell the young porter about his amazing adventures
around the world. The old Sindbad said he was once part of an ill-fated
trading voyage where his ship was invaded by a herd of wild monkeys.
Sindbad and his companions abandoned ship, only to fall into the
clutches of a horrible giant who loved the taste of human flesh. They
escaped the giant only to find themselves stranded on an island
inhabited by crocodiles, a rhinoceros, and a huge man-eating snake. One
by one Sindbad’s comrades were killed or eaten until only he was left.
Young readers will enjoy this rollicking new Sindbad tale.
Author/illustrator Ludmila Zeman has done an outstanding job of
maintaining just the right balance between horror and humor in both her
prose and paintings. Each illustration panel blazes with movement and
color. Highly recommended.
