Review

Author/illustrator Frances Wolfe lives by the sea in Portuguese Cove,
Nova Scotia. This beautiful picture book for preschoolers features 14
magnificent double-page paintings of the seaside area around her home.
With minimal dialogue and strikingly vibrant, richly detailed artwork,
Wolfe tells her story. It will all but make young readers believe that
they are right there with her by the sea.

At the seashore we see gulls, the view through the binoculars, a small
boat, a basket of blueberries, a young girl daydreaming, some intricate
and delicate seashells, the water, firelight, the day, the night, and
raindrops on the window.

In addition to the book’s visual splendor, readers will also have the
fun of trying to figure out its hidden puzzle (the first letter of each
of its seven two-line phrases spells out “seaside”). Where I Live is
a book that children and adults will look at time and again, as if it
were a treasured photo album. Highly recommended.
