Review

A young boy remembers all his activities of the day before he falls
asleep. The boy’s recollections from his bed begin with ordinary
things he may have done and evolve into wonderful fantasies where
“Sidewalks may be trampolines. There won’t be any lima beans.” The
boy’s imagination takes him on boats and space ships and to visit
kings and queens. The children he encounters along the way become more
and more magical. Gradually the boy becomes ready to “drift off to
dreamland.”

Before I Say Goodnight is the first book for both Julia Porter and
Patricia Pearsall. Porter’s text consists of rhyming couplets.
Children will enjoy the quiet rhythms of the bedtime story as they drift
off to sleep. Pearsall’s whimsical illustrations in pastel colors
enhance the calm, simple text. A fine first effort. Recommended.
