Review

Like millions of young Canadian boys, Paul loves the game of hockey. But
this year is different. It’s not only the beginning of a new school
year and a new hockey season for Paul’s team, it’s also the
beginning of the 1972 Canada–Russia hockey series.

Paul is so excited about the series that he chooses the subject for his
Grade 4 school project. Unfortunately, some of the games are scheduled
to take place during the school day. But that problem is easily solved.
The school’s principal is a huge hockey fan, and he allows Paul and
the rest of his schoolmates to view the games in the school’s
cafeteria and in class.

Young Paul’s hockey hero is Paul Henderson, whom he hopes will score
many goals during the series. Henderson does not disappoint; he scores
the most memorable hockey goal of all time, and Paul couldn’t be
happier.

This book is sure to stir up a lot of hockey memories for parents, and
young hockey fans will especially enjoy reading it as Mike Leonetti’s
delightful story and Sean Thompson’s vibrant illustrations bring to
life a great moment in Canadian history. Highly recommended for all
public and school libraries.
