Early one morning, Grampa has an idea. “We’re going to make a
flute,” he tells his granddaughter. And they set out into the
wilderness to find a branch.
“Oh, Grampa. You can’t really make a flute. You’re just
teasing.” After all, she thinks, an old stick could never make
beautiful music.
Then back at the house, Grampa skilfully whittles away at the wood
until it’s a flute. When his granddaughter blows into it, the music is
sweet and pretty, just like music from the sky.
Denise Gillard has written an endearing story, set in one of Canada’s
oldest black communities, about a special day a grandfather and
granddaughter share. The beautiful illustrations by Stephen Taylor add
warmth, capturing loving expressions and the day’s delight.
