Review

This book provides brief overviews of seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
and various other mood disorders, including clinical depression. Little
technical material is provided, and the “case studies” consist of
one- or two-paragraph testimonials. Checklists for self-diagnosis of
periodic depression are included, along with the names of peer support
groups and mood disorder clinics/physicians across North America. The
book is generally well researched (although one table confuses humidity
with barometric pressure). In its presentation, it recalls a tabloid
health supplement: trendy, entertaining, lacking in depth. Those wanting
to self-treat for SAD should seek out more technical books on this
controversial condition.
