Review

Animal Sneezes is a collection of 10 short verses, each one describing
the sometimes humorous and sometimes fantastical sneeze of a particular
animal. They range from the drooling pig (whose sneezes don’t even
wake him) and the bull in the barn (whose sneezes are so violent they
shake the feathers right off the chickens) to elephants, bears, and even
a three-toed sloth. Each verse is imaginative and rhythmical, ideal for
reading aloud.

The book’s best feature is David Wysotski’s bright and fun
illustrations. Every animal character shows great expression and there
are a host of never-mentioned animals reacting to the tremendous sneezes
in every scene. The real joy is in the playful details on each page,
from the trumpeting swan in his royal robes to the pirate-like otter
complete with eye patch and hook. These pictures demand that the reader
linger before turning the page. Highly recommended.
