Review

Ghost Cat is a tender story of love and friendship between the elderly
Miss Wilkinson and her cat, Tommy Douglas. Each day when Miss Wilkinson
returns home from her various activities, Tommy Douglas is always
waiting for her, offering his unconditional love. But soon he grows old
and there are things he can no longer do. When he becomes ill and dies
in her arms, Miss Wilkinson is heartbroken. Then one sleepless night
Miss Wilkinson is visited by the ghost of Tommy Douglas. Although she
can’t see him, she feels his presence and knows that he will always be
with her.

Mark Abley is a well-known author and journalist. This is his first
book for children; young readers will find it easy to read and
comforting. As Miss Wilkinson’s grief at the loss of her companion
drains the joy from her life, Tommy Douglas lets her know that he is
still there and will always be with her. Karen Reczuch’s bright
pictures beautifully illustrate the moving story. Recommended.
