Review

Neither rain nor sleet nor gloom of fog is ignored in this informative
little book about all types of inclement weather. For over a decade,
Valerie Wyatt has been turning out highly readable science books and
already has nearly a dozen published titles to her credit. In this
volume, she explains why raindrops keep falling on your head or ill
winds blow good and strong in your neighborhood.

The text is divided into short two-page chapters. Chapter titles
include “Cool it!,” “Brrrr and Shiverrrr,” “Snowsuit or
Swimsuit?,” “It’s in the Wind,” “Hold onto Your Hat,”
“Fogged In,” “Thunder and Lightning,” “Hurricane and
Tornados,” and “Monsoons and El Nino.” Brian Share, as
illustrator, has spiked each chapter with hilarious semi-realistic
illustrations of quirky little penguins who ride bicycles, slather on
sunscreen, or find themselves airborne in a windstorm. Charts, colorful
illustrations, and sidebars also appear in nearly every chapter. There
are an index, a glossary, and even snow-and-cloud charts at the back of
the book for quick reference. The punchy prose and fun format ensures
that young readers will read this book from cover to cover. Highly
recommended.
