Review
These latest five books in Crabtree’s Sports in Action series describe
each sport; outline the rules; and provide tips, drills, and exercises
to facilitate the mastery of particular skills and to generally improve
the individual’s game.
Each book has a chapter that points out salient features of the game, a
chapter that covers the essentials (such as proper clothing and
equipment), and one that describes appropriate warming-up exercises.
Chapters focusing on the skills associated with each sport and on
alternative ways of playing the game (if applicable) make up the rest of
the book. A glossary and index aid speedy reference.
The books are aimed at beginners ages 6 to 9. Clear illustrations and
photographs support the text. Practice drills are presented in a clear
step-by-step format and are designed to address a particular skill. Tips
are very specific. However, young players ages 10 to 12 will find the
books useful, too, because the reader gains a working understanding of
the game for that age level (for example, a chapter in Soccer is devoted
to the skill of “trapping,” and another in Baseball discusses
“bunting”). All five books are recommended.
