Review

This large-format book of advice and information for young gardeners is
well conceived and beautifully carried out. It should interest young
children from ages eight and up as well as their parents and older
siblings. Black-and-white illustrations, touched with green, add to its
clarity and attractiveness.

The book covers an amazing amount of territory. Six main sections focus
on how gardens grow, fruit and vegetables, flowers, native plants,
wildlife gardens, and school and community plots. The book also
identifies plants that will flourish in major North American regions and
those that attract butterflies and birds, discusses container gardens
for apartment dwellers, and highlights many other special features.
Karyn Morris’s clear, illustrated advice and information will appeal
to a wide range of gardeners and attract new ones.

Young people will find ideas for such projects as drying flowers;
attracting birds; and growing their own perfume, medicine, and insect
repellents. Also included are clever suggestions and instructions for
building a composter, making a scarecrow, planning a peace garden,
constructing a sunflower fort or a toad garden, and creating a
wildflower meadow. Highly recommended.
