Review
Part of the AlphaBasiCs series, this book is packed with information
designed to make children think about where they live, how, and with
whom. It explores issues such as multiculturalism and the environment,
with some emphasis on waste management and recycling. Mainly
concentrating on North American urban life, it nonetheless touches on
rural life in Canada and in other countries. Each letter of the alphabet
begins a word that pertains to community, and that word is defined and
explained. Photos, drawings, and examples illustrate the words. What Is
a Community? also doubles as a workbook, posing provocative questions
for class discussions. Highly recommended.
