Review
Set in the late 19th century, this juvenile novel follows the life of
the diminutive heroine, Josephine. Sold by her parents to the
headmistress of MacLaren Academy for Girls, the 22–inch-tall girl
knows nothing but misery for the next five years.
Finally, she escapes, and winds up in the employment of R.J. Walters,
proprietor of a Coney Island curiosity show. While on display, “Little
Jo-Jo of Bavaria” is spotted by an irate Mrs. MacLaren and a series of
dramatic events follow as Mr. Walters, the headmistress, and Josephine
lock horns over who, ultimately, owns the rights to Jo’s future.
The strongest aspect of this novel is the integration of historical
detail into the fabric of the story. The mix of characters is eclectic
and there are several sound underlying messages: the importance of
celebrating human differences, the ability of the individual to change
the course of his or her life, and the true meaning of friendship and
loyalty.
At times the plot seems a little far-fetched and convenient. For
example, Josephine makes a dear bosom buddy at the academy on the same
night she escapes. Timing the forging of this alliance a little
differently would have allowed the characters more time to develop the
bond that winds up being so important later in the book.
An entertaining read, this novel about life outside the mainstream also
has lots of potential as a good discussion starter for children in
Grades 4 to 7. Recommended.
