Review
The Talk-about-books, which are intended for toddlers and adults to read
together, feature photographs and pose questions about those photographs
that are meant to encourage preschoolers to relate their own experience.
Happy Birthday features photos of a variety of children (reflecting
Canada’s racial diversity) participating in such birthday activities
as opening presents, playing with friends, and eating fun food. Let’s
Pretend shows children playing doctor, going to a restaurant, and hiding
from a dragon in a make-believe castle. The photos’ home-snapshot
ambience gives readers the impression that they are sneaking a peak at
someone’s family album.
Like previous books in the series—Toys, Hats, My Mom, My Dad,
Sisters, Brothers, My Family, The Playground, Clothes, Shoes, My
Grandma, and My Grandpa—these latest volumes are sturdily designed.
Each is compact enough for small hands to handle easily, each is printed
on robust cardboard to withstand serious toddler scrutiny, and each
focuses on a highly familiar theme. Recommended.
