Review

The author, a woodworker and industrial arts teacher in Snow Lake,
Manitoba, explains in his introductions that “these books aren’t
about making perfect objects from wood, or turning children into skilled
woodworkers. They are about adults—with or without woodworking
training—and children having fun together.” As the books’ titles
indicate, each volume contains two self-contained projects. The books
begin with a page of safety advice that covers “preparing the work
area” and “things to watch out for while working.” “Tools and
Materials” lists and illustrates what is needed. Only common hand
tools are utilized in the construction of the four items. The actual
construction is presented in a step-by-step fashion; the accompanying
conversational text is illustrated with color photographs of Ainsworth
and his young daughter working together. For those new to woodworking
and/or using tools, sidebars provide additional helpful information and
tips. Ainsworth’s advice on how to help children use adult-sized tools
is particularly useful. Both books would be worthwhile purchases for
school and public libraries, as well as for parents and youth
organizations such as Wolf Cubs, Scouts, and Guides. Highly recommended.
