Review

With the total number of his hockey trivia books now in double digits,
Weekes continues to use the same basic reader-involving format. Instead
of simply providing readers with various bits of hockey trivia, he
invites hockey aficionados to use their knowledge to answer questions he
poses in a variety of ways. The bulk of the book consists of seven
sections, each containing 18 to 25 questions, with four possible answers
given for each question. Following every grouping of multiple-choice
questions, Weekes provides the correct answers via informative
paragraphs that provide a context for the appropriate responses. Readers
are also challenged by a crossword puzzle, a true-false section, three
word-finds, and four word-matching sections that are interspersed among
the multiple-choice games.

The author once again includes his “Reader Rebound” segment, 22
hockey questions posed by readers. While trivia about the National
Hockey League predominates, Weekes has included a section on the
now-defunct World Hockey League and another on the 1998 Olympics.
Recently retired Mario Lemieux and the Stanley Cup playoffs are two
additional focuses.

Though the consumable nature of Awesome Hockey Trivia may make it seem
to be more appropriate for individual purchasers than institutional
ones, the book deserves consideration by public and middle/senior
high-school libraries. Recommended.
