Review

This compilation of figure-skating facts and biographies has a
magazine-like format, with text and photographs occupying roughly equal
space.

The history of figure skating is traced, with an emphasis on how
changes in the materials and styles of skates have affected the sport.
Vignettes and photos of great skaters of the past are interspersed
throughout the text, serving to illustrate the development of figure
skating, particularly since World War II. Jumps and tricks of the trade
are described and figure-skating terms are defined. All aspects of
competition are covered, including the role of coaches, judges, and
announcers. There are chapters on skaters who have become household
names, as well as coverage of up-and-coming stars.

Highlighted sidebars provide interesting facts, and an informative
chapter titled “Skate Talk” offers useful tips on choosing such
things as the right pair of skates. Recommended for figure skaters and
fans of the sport.
