Review
This kit contains the materials a child aged 8 or older needs to sew
three fabric animals. There are four patterns to choose from—a fish, a
frog, a dog, and a bean—and enough material to create three of the
four. Refill packs can be ordered. Materials include three pieces of
fabric, three pairs of eyes, two noses, and an activity book. Dried,
uncooked beans with which to fill the animals need to be purchased, as
well as such basic sewing supplies as scissors, needle, pins, and
thread.
The fabric, velour, is bright, primary-colored, and easy to work with.
Detailed instructions on applying the pattern pieces to the fabric and
cutting out are provided. The running stitch is clearly illustrated, and
there are useful tips for simplifying and expediting the sewing process.
Diagrams assist with eye and nose attachment. “Finishing touches”
tips complete the cuddly toy.
Although the pattern layouts and instructions must be followed
carefully, there is room for individuality. Children are encouraged to
embellish their “friends” with doll’s clothes, beads, felt,
sequins, and jewellery. The kit includes four birth certificates that
can be filled out with personal information pertaining to each animal.
The author suggests creative ways to display the toys (mobiles, etc.). A
glossary of sewing terms contributes to the learning process.
Recommended as a creative introduction to sewing.
