Review

Egg-shaped Dumpty has a problem. He has accidentally shrunk the favorite
blanket of his friend, Humpty. Now Humpty is sleepy and wants his
blanket back so he can take a nap. Rather than tell Humpty the truth,
Dumpty asks the Polkaroo for advice. Polkaroo suggests giving Humpty a
squeaky polka-dot pig to cuddle. Unfortunately, Humpty doesn’t want a
squeeze toy, he wants his favorite blanket. Next, Polkaroo suggests
giving Humpty a set of cozy pyjamas. Once again, Humpty rejects the
substitute and insists on having his blanket. Dumpty now has no options
but to tell Humpty what happened. Just when things look very bleak, the
Polkaroo saves the day with a surprise present.

Polkaroo, Humpty, and Dumpty, who live in the Land of Roo, are all
familiar to those who watch TV Ontario’s Polka Dot Shorts. This book
is an adaptation of one of the TV segments. Like most TV-to- book
adaptations, the characters have the advantage of instant audience
recognition. Gordon Sauvé’s colorful illustrations capture the spirit
of the story perfectly. Recommended.
