Jessica Takes Charge

Jessica is an intrepid little girl with an affinity for monsters. When
she informs her parents that she hears one growling in their house at
night, they don’t believe her. So, when she hears it growling again
after her parents go to sleep, she resolves she must vanquish the
monster herself. Going through the dark house at night, she encounters
many menacing objects that turn out to be commonplace in the light.
Undaunted, she perseveres and traces the growling monster to her
father’s bed, which she quickly douses with cold water, only to find
that it was her father’s snoring she heard!

Leanne Franson’s illustrations are delightful. Using soft watercolors
in vibrant shades, she creates distorted shadow monsters from people,
toys, and plants to help establish a foreboding atmosphere. Throughout,
she incorporates images of St. Bernard dogs, including Jessica’s fuzzy
slippers, salt and pepper shakers, and a wall clock. These images of
brave dogs contrast with the family’s own huge but cowardly pet, who
whimpers and hides behind the sofa, and serve to highlight the
adventurous spirit of small Jessica. Together, the illustrations and the
story paint a portrait of a fearless little girl. Recommended.
