Review

“Something woke us early that morning. Maybe it was the silence.
Millions of snowflakes drifted down. Everything was covered in a deep
blanket of snow. Would it be deep enough? Would school be closed? We
waited and waited. I was just about to drag myself out the door when I
heard the magic words ... Snow Day!”

You have to have had a childhood in a wintery climate like Canada’s
to know why the words “Snow Day” can send a warm tingle up a
child’s spine instead of a cold chill. No pencils, no books, no
school—only snow, glorious snow, and a whole day to play in it.
Author/illustrator Werner Zimmermann uses simple prose and
fleecy-textured illustrations to bring the magic of a snow day to the
reader. The book’s young narrator crams a week’s worth of snow fun
into one long action-packed day. There are snow forts to build and snow
angels to make, toboggans to be ridden and snow-hating adults to feel
sorry for. The day ends with feet slowly thawing in a snug kitchen while
hands cradle a cup of hot chocolate. A great book to curl up with in
front of a warm fire, especially if it is snowing outside. Highly
recommended.
