Review

Like Bonnie Shemie’s previous four books in this Native Dwellings
series, Mounds of Earth and Shell discusses in words and lucid drawings
the Native settlement of the southeastern region of North America. She
delves into the unique architecture of the people, as well as their
rites, ceremonies, games, and customs. Her book gives particular
emphasis to constructed mounds from as far north as present-day Ontario
(Serpent Mounds) to the states of the American deep south.

While the information presented is not extensive, it is accessible to
young children, and Shemie’s research is admirably grounded in wide
readings. Her uncluttered and realistic artwork includes both shaded
line drawings and double-page color spreads. Recommended
