Review
Part of the Discovering Canada series, this title will enliven
junior/intermediate history classes with its informative text,
black-and-white drawings, and artistic application of knowledge.
Co-authors Robert Livesey and A.G. Smith present a balanced melding of
facts, lore, biography, and crafts. Bringing to life Canada before the
arrival of settlers, the text covers the following tribes: East Coast,
Mountain, Arctic, Plains, Subarctic, West Coast, and Woodlands. Customs,
myths and legends, and famous heroes are given good (if not
comprehensive) coverage. Craft activities such as building a model
longhouse and making a bird mask, plus games such as the Inuit’s
Nuglukutug, the Cree Moccasin game, and other related activities, round
out this engaging book. Complete with maps and a detailed index, it is a
fine addition to an excellent series and will enhance collections on
Native peoples of Canada. Recommended.
