Review

This is the sixth “Simon” book from award-winning author and
illustrator Gilles Tibo, and it lives up to the reputation Tibo
established for the earlier entries in the series. In this instalment,
Simon and his friend, Marlene, puzzle over and enjoy the waning and
waxing of the moon, attempting to catch its reflection in water, asking
a witch why it disappears and Pierrot where it has gone, and, finally,
writing it a love poem, begging it to return.

As in the other Simon books, each page of text follows Simon’s
attempts to understand or capture the essence of the book’s focus, in
this case the moon. And each textual page is accompanied by one of
Tibo’s luminous, brilliant illustrations, from which colours leap and
light seems to shine out. Each painting is filled with hidden clues and
secrets, a story unto itself. It is no wonder Tibo has won both national
and international prizes for his illustrations. This book will not
disappoint fans of the Simon series. Highly recommended.
