Review

On October 5, 1982, Laurie Skreslet became the 131st person and the
first Canadian to reach the summit of Mount Everest. This book documents
that extraordinary Canadian mountaineering expedition. Skreslet, who as
a kid was clumsy and afraid of heights, possesses a broad streak of
stubbornness, which becomes apparent as we follow him through the
meticulous planning stages of the expedition right through to his
triumphant arrival at the summit of the world’s tallest mountain.

Even readers who know nothing about mountaineering will quickly get
caught up in the excitement of the climb. Relevant terminology is
explained quickly and simply without slowing the flow of the narrative.
Full-color photos show mountain crevasses, scenes at various camps,
close-ups of equipment, and expedition members at their best (and
worst).

Skreslet’s grim determination in the face of adversity (four died on
the expedition), his refusal to give in to those who said he couldn’t
do what he set out to do, and his accomplishments even when injured and
against overwhelming odds are clearly conveyed. Young readers interested
in learning about mountaineering and those curious about Canada’s
momentous first ascent to the top of Everest will find Skreslet’s
account both moving and inspiring. Highly recommended.
