Review
Robert Munsch is in top form with Ribbon Rescue, a delightful tale with
delicious patterning and an utterly satisfying happy ending.
Jillian is wearing her beautiful ribbon dress for the very first time
when a series of desperate strangers turn up looking for the church.
They are late for a wedding and need her help. Jillian takes two of her
ribbons to tie the groom’s shoes, four more for the bride’s hair,
five to help wrap a wedding gift, and one, her very last, to tie the
ring to the finger of the disorganized best man. She directs them all to
head for the church steeple so they won’t get lost.
The repetitions will tickle small children, and the surprise ending is
quite perfect. Eugenie Fernandes has written and illustrated dozens of
picture books, but this is her first collaboration with Munsch. Her
colorful, high-spirited paintings are detailed and witty. Fernandes and
Munsch make a great team. Ribbon Rescue and its full-page illustrations
overflow with joy and exuberation. Highly recommended.
