Review

Thanksgiving Day in Canada is well written and very informative. I would
imagine that adults as well as children will learn important facts about
what distinguishes the Canadian observance of this holiday from
traditions of other countries.

The book follows one family’s celebration of Thanksgiving, as mother
and father take their two children to spend the day with their
grandparents. Grandfather tells the little girl the story of
Thanksgiving in Canada, imparting a considerable amount of historical
information in the process. As he outlines both European and American
influences on the Canadian tradition, Grandfather makes sure that Irene
understands that Canada has its own Thanksgiving history, including the
first North American Thanksgiving celebration, held by English navigator
Martin Frobisher in Newfoundland, in 1578.

This book is both interesting and entertaining, although the
illustrations leave much to be desired. While colorful, they are
amateurish and often boring. Nevertheless, there are so few sources of
information about Canadian Thanksgiving available, and this one is so
well researched, that the book should be recommended on the basis of its
text alone.
